Anoma is a Cetacean expert has committed his life to the study and preservation of nature. His interest in nature goes back to his childhood, growing up in Kottawa in the Galle region. The lush forest surroundings close to his home provided him much entertainment, and many hours were spent absorbing the wonders around him.

Upon leaving school, Anoma began his career at the Galle Maritime Museum under the tutelage of its curator Mr Dharma Sri Kandamby – a keen representative of the Wildlife Conservation Society at national and international platforms whose vast experience as a scientific collector includes the discovery of a new species of endemic frogs and crabs. Accompanying his mentor on such voyages of discovery, Anoma was soon an equally dab hand at finding and identifying the wealth of natural life around him, including the discovery of a new species of endemic lizards, freshwater fishes, frogs and freshwater crabs. These projects continued to become the subject of numerous research papers which Anoma compiled as part of his Wildlife Conservation & Management Programme at the Open University, and Biodiversity Management Diploma at the University of Colombo.

Anoma joined Jetwing in 2004 and plays a vital role up to date as one of Jetwing’s key experts on the wilds of the Southern region of Sri Lanka. As the resident naturalist, Anoma enjoys the opportunity to share his passion - to communicate the importance of the natural world and with guests from around the world. He leads interactive whale watching tours during six months of the year – at high season, he is also involved in planning new education programmes, and conducting workshops as well as attending industry related conferences and workshops.
Dedicated and enthusiastic, Anoma is currently applying innovative conservations methods to preserve and improve the propagation of Southern region Marine life. He has participated as a field assistant and organized infrastructural studies in research campaigns conducted by eminent British academics and marine biologists, referenced in Wild Heritage Trust adding rare insights to the country’s wild habitats. Anoma’s researches have been published in the Journal of South Asian Natural History offering his unique contribution at global standards. He has also worked in conjunction with the National Maritime Museum Galle and is a proactive member of the Galle Wildlife Society as well as of BEES – Biodiversity Exploration and Education Society.
A licenced, Ceylon Tourist Board Guide and Lecturer, Anoma is a very active and supportive member of the Blue Whale Conservation Group at Mirissa. As a Naturalist and Marine Biologist, he is keen on promoting conservation through tourism increasing local revenue via continuous dynamic strategies. Our commitment to the environment and proactive support to his personal and professional vision has enabled Anoma to set his sights on bigger goals. Anoma is completing his research into the largest mammals of the deep and has set up Sri Lanka’s first whale watching information centre at Jetwing Lighthouse, Galle. While he still answers the call of the wild from the forests of his childhood, it is the songs of the deep that beckon him today to discover more mysteries of the Ocean in the future.

A primary school teacher for 30 years, he retired from teaching in July 2009 to set up my own science enhancement and communication company. The Primary Works offers science clubs, workshops and staged science shows nationwide. He have always been interested in bird watching since my early years. Apparently his first tick was after inquiring about a chaffinch and then receiving the Observer book of birds. By the age of 9 he had moved on to Tory Peterson's collins guide and was now involved on YOC birding holidays to Northumbria, Essex coast, Slimbridge and Yorkshire. His twitching rule is that he will willingly travel 1km for each gram the bird weighs.
However, he have had many rarities just by being in the right place. He have travelled widely throughout Europe and also visited Australia and Sri Lanka. In 2016 he spent time at Portland Bird Obs and two trips to Aviero, Portugal. 2017 found him back in Sri Lanka in Feb/March, then July and back for New Year's Eve celebrations in December. Also returned to The Camargue in May for a 4 day trip. Interests - Natural history, with particular reference to birds: cricket, red wine, travel, photography.
