Bundala National Park

Migratory birds, especially flamingoes and waders are the specials expected to witness in Bundala National Park. Apart from that presence of Asian Wild Elephants are given immense importance as well.

A former governer of the South Leonard Wold has made it a point to mention about Bundala in his diary as a frequent visitor of the park. The house he lived still exists in Bundala.

Bundala was identified as an important wildlife sanctuary in 1969 and was declared as a National Park in 1993 with a land area of 6,2,16 hectares.

In 1991, Bundala became the first wetland in Sri Lanka to be declared as a Ramsar Site. In 2005, the national park was designated as a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, the fourth biosphere reserve in Sri Lanka. The area was declared a wildlife sanctuary on December 5, 1969, and later, it was upgraded to a national park on January 4, 1993. Also, one area of the park has been converted into a saltern. The ecological areas of the park contains seven terrestrial habitat types and six wetland types, with dry thorny shrubs and herbs creating the most abundant plant life.
